SUMMARY:Alternative Practice: The Future of Work
DESCRIPTION:The image of the built environment worker is a tired one. Student dreams are quickly retired as you become a young worker\, questioning if this is really what you signed up for. But as union power and alternative\, worker-led business models begin to shine through the cracks\, is the future of built environment labour ultimately on the right track? – and does it have the capacity to change the nature and outcome of the work we do for the better? Armed with a cocktail in one hand and a placard in the other\, Alternative Practice re-groups for a discussion on the future of work. \nTickets here!

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us for an evening of good food\, good drink and good conversation at Build Studios. Alternative Practice aims to create a community of young workers and students that are interested in challenging the boundaries of traditional built environment discipline. \nAlternative Practice presents a workshop to explore participation in sustainable urbanism. Guided by our hosts Amy Marsden (landscape architect) and Will Chantry (sustainability consultant) we will map\, make and play whilst redefining what a ‘sustainable’ city looks\, feels and behaves like. We will use the inner-city pocket of Waterloo as our canvas\, to develop our sustainable agenda. \nNote: No prior knowledge of Waterloo or sustainable urbanism is necessary. Our activities will be focusing on the two primary walking routes from Waterloo Station (and adjacent bus stops) to Build Studios. If you have time before the workshop feel free to take a conscious walk from there to us to take in the area. Otherwise your curiosity and enthusiasm will more than suffice. \nOur Workshop Facilitators \nOur speakers/facilitators are either students or young workers. We believe It is important to give young people agency in important discussions. Rejecting the idea that you have to be ‘established’ or ‘successful’ to have a voice. We hope this can encourage a participative environment. \nAmy Marsden\, Landscape Architect at Mcgregor Coxall \nWill Chantry\, Geographer and sustainability consultant at Savills \nGet a ticket here

SUMMARY:LFA Waterloo - Station; Destination; Shared Aspiration
DESCRIPTION:Build Studios and WeAreWaterloo are co-hosting a unique event during London Festival of Architecture\, which will explore  the development of Waterloo and the response from its diverse communities. \nAs a result of the proposed Station Masterplan and other major developments such as Royal Street\, passengers passing through this busy transport hub will experience a fantastic improvement\, but how will these and other major developments integrate with\, and enhance\, the lives of those living in\, rather than passing through\, this unique part of London? \nThe richness of Waterloo lies in its diversity\, with a vibrant arts scene\, independent businesses\, an engaged and active resident population\, and new developments by the station. This is the goal of a new placemaking strategy managed by WeAreWaterloo BID. \nThe panel chaired by Helen Santer will explore how to achieve consensus in Waterloo’s fast-changing environment.

SUMMARY:PowWow Waterloo - Making Space for Women
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate International Women’s Day 2022 and National Careers Week\, WeAreWaterloo have partnered with Build Studios for the first PowWow panel talk of the year to shine a light on inspirational women within the built environment. \nHear from Tara Gbolade (RIBAJ’s Rising Star Winner\, Co-Founder of GD Studio and the Paradigm Network – a professional network championing Black and Asian representation in the built environment)\, Fiona McDonald (Head of Learning at the Design Museum and co-founder of Matt+Fiona\, an award-winning architectural education organisation)\, Imogen Blaikie (Urban Planner at Allies and Morrison\, a leading architecture and urban planning practice currently developing a placemaking strategy for Waterloo) and Ana Becheru (Director on secondment for Global Operations and EMEA Capital Programmes Delivery Manager with JonesLang LaSalle\, JLL). \nWhile our panel represents a line-up of groundbreaking talent\, it does not reflect reality within the built environment sector: \n– In England\, less than 30% of all registered architects are women (AJ) \n– In the UK\, around 11% of engineers are women\, thought to be the lowest rate in Europe (Property Week) \n– Almost 90% of female architects say having children puts them at a disadvantage in terms of career growth (AJ) \n– Almost 94% of architects are white (The Guardian) \nWhat is causing this lack of representation to persist\, and preventing us from having all the voices we need at the table to design the towns and cities we need to navigate local problems and global challenges alike? \nJoin us for an evening of challenging\, thought-provoking and insightful conversation led by Helen Santer\, Chief Executive of Build Studios (an inclusive hub for the built environment) and partnerships specialist\, addressing issues ranging from access and representation while unpacking how we can make space for women\, in more ways than one. \nAttendees will receive a complimentary drink on arrival and are invited to network post-event. DJ\, a bar (open until late) and good times to be expected! \nPowWow Waterloo is a pop-up debate series created by WeAreWaterloo BID and produced by WRB Studios with the sole purpose of making Waterloo *the* place to have challenging discussions\, while opening up the neighbourhood to new audiences. \nTickets are £5 and include a free house wine/beer/soft drink.
